Basil Bunting

My daughter (Charlotte Bunting Floyd) has a friend who vacationed in Durham, England, and found a postcard with the picture of Basil Bunting, poet. Charlotte found a lot of information on the internet about him. Lived 1900-1985 and recognized as a major poet by the top literary figures of his day. My daughter has ordered one of his books from of us were intrigued, and wondered if Basil Bunting shows up in any family trees of the Bunting Society members. Any comments would be appreciated. My family tree shows a Samuel Bunting, who lived in Matlock, Derbyshire, England, and moved to Crosswicks,NJ,USA in 1678.

If no one else has said so then yes we do have the poet Basil Bunting recorded in the Societies database. Our library has at least a couple of books written by or about Basil but a better source might well be your own local lending library.
Also Samuel's parents in Matlock, DBY are in the database too plus notes about the farmstead at Buntingfield which is about three miles from Matlock. A group of our American Members, descended from Samuel and his brothers, meet annually, in April, in the USA.
More information about people and trees can be gleaned from our Record Keeper, Mary Rix. Her contact link can be found above in "About Us". Or why don't you or your daughter become a Members?
Happy hunting.

I was so taken with these stories that I had a look on the Internet and came across this site

; it's well worth a look. Do we have any other budding poets in our midst? Barbara.

I have recently joined the Society and am pleased to be able to reply to a query so soon. My father was the Basil Bunting mentioned. Durham University Library hold the archive of his work for those who want to research his poetry. I have a fairly good family tree but I would be pleased to recieve any links or comments. Maria
