Thank you for your reply. I have just looked at findmypast but it seems to me that their relevant emigration information does not go back as far as 1820, unless I am misunderstanding it.
I can confirm that William was born in Oulton in 1808 and that his parents were Susannah Bramble and Charles Bunting. Charles was the subject of a bastardy bond in relation to William. Charles and Susannah eventually married in Oulton in 1811 but both Susannah and William often still went by the name of Bramble.
Re - William 1808. As I mentioned our records have a William b.1807, born in Oulton, also listing his wife Mary and their children which suggests to me that it may have been a census record extract, probably from 1851. Until Mary returns from Australia to identify the source we seem to be stuck on that piece of information.
Prior to the full introduction of passports there used to be permits to travel abroad and these records are normally to be found at The National Archives (TNA). I suppose it is possible that there may be some copies at Norwich too.
Is there anything else on this Bastardy Bond about Charles? Is he described as single. Was he self employed? Was his age given? Was William born in the workhouse? By the way the Society would appreciate having a copy of the bond.
How did you discover that Charles and Susannah had travelled to and in America?
Thank you for your reply, and also to Tony for his input.
Yes, William and Mary and the children are the correct family. Incidentally, they are often listed as Bramble rather than Bunting as the whole family went by either name for many years.
I do not have a copy of the Bastardy Bond but will try to get one from the person who originally gave me the information.
I found a record some years ago on the internet for Charles Bunting, Susannah Bramble and their son William Bramble being in Cumberland County, North Carolina in 1820. It wouldn't print so I copied down the information, but unfortunately not the website! I have, frustratingly, not been able to find any reference to it since.
Thank you for your interest. Jill
