Probate Questionaire - Urgent

The UK Probate (Wills) Service has published a questionaire regarding payment for a copy of the Calendar or the Will itself.

This is particularly relevant to non-UK citizens and for those who live outside the London area..

The official closing date for replies is tomorrow 27th March 2009.

I will ask John Briden to postpone closure until after the weekend so keep sending replies until then just in case they are accepted.

Old Bailey Proceedings 1674-1913

I was very pleased to discover that the Old Bailey has an on-line database containing photographs and transcripts of its ledgers minuting the criminal court's proceedings from 1674-1913. It is free to access and has a superb search engine. I found it really helpful. If you have relatives who might have been found guilty or not guilty there go and have a look or if you are feeling inquisitive simply type in Bunting and look at them all. You can find it at http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/

The London Gazette

In the will of an ancestor of mine thousands of pounds were shared between his children, but; his eldest son was left one shilling. This seemed a bit strange to me. I searched the London Gazette for the year the will was made and found his eldest son in debtors prison as a bankrupt. I looked up some Buntings around the same period and found the following interesting records. The London Gazette archive can be searched.
